Abstract

The background of this research is based on the unique context of Pulau Midai, whose relatively isolated geographical characteristics and strong cultural identity provide a distinctive opportunity to explore how local factors influence the development of Early Childhood Education (ECE). This study is not only relevant from a historical perspective but also offers practical implications for the development of ECE today and in the future. The objectives of this research are: (1) To describe the chronological stages of ECE development in Pulau Midai, from the era of informal education to the establishment of the current formal institution; and (2) To analyze the institutional transformation process of ECE in Pulau Midai by examining the driving factors, inhibiting factors, and the roles of key actors involved. This is a qualitative descriptive study conducted at Taman Kanak-kanak Negeri (TKN) Midai. The findings reveal that the long journey of early childhood education in Pulau Midai reflects how community spirit, visionary leadership, and educator dedication have formed the foundation of the institution now known as TKN Midai. Beginning with suraus that instilled character values, and eventually evolving into an accredited formal institution, this success is not merely the result of policy but the outcome of decades of collective effort. Therefore, it is recommended that the spirit of service and local wisdom, which are the roots of Midai’s educational philosophy, continue to be preserved and used as the foundation for curriculum development, teacher quality improvement, and the provision of better facilities to meet future educational challenges.
